Icicle, icicle, where are you going?

Today, a special treat for all. I finished up my Icicle Wristwarmers last night, so that means I can post the pattern. Woo!

This is my first attempt at writing up a pattern so that other people can follow it. If you have any questions or notice any errors, please let me know.

Icicle Wristwarmers:

Icicle Wristwarmer

Icicle Wristwarmers

Materials:
Size 5 (3.75mm) double pointed needles.

Approx 125 yds Worsted Weight yarn. I used Sundara‘s Worsted Merino, which is unfortunately not currently available.

Gauge: Eh, whatever. These are ribbed and quite stretchy.

Sized to fit a woman’s average to large hand. For smaller wristwarmers, cast on fewer stitches in multiples of 4. I have large hands/wrists and these fit me well.

Pattern:
Left wristwarmer:
CO 48 sts.
Arrange on 3 dpns (16 sts each ndl)
Join for working in the round, pm to indicate beginning of round.
Work 2×2 rib for 5-6 rows.

Work in Cable pattern as follows:

Cable Pattern:
Row 1-2: k2, p2, k6, p2, k6, p2, *k2, p2* *repeat to end of round
Row 3 (Cable Round): k2, p2, C6F, p2, C6B, p2, *k2, p2*
Row 4-6 – same as round 1
Row 7-18: Repeat these 6 rows 2 more times

Row 19: k6, p2, k6, p2, k6, p2, *k2, p2*
Row 20: same as row 19
Row 21: C6B, p2, C6F, p2, C6B, p2, *k2, p2*
Row 22-24: same as row 19.
Rows 25-36: Repeat these 6 rows twice more

Repeat rows 1-18 once more.

Note: For rows 1-18, I found it easier to rearrange the stitches so there are 18 sts on needle 1.

Gusset: On row 29, begin gusset. Work to last 4 sts of needle 3, pm, kfb twice, pm, p2
Continue as follows for stitches between the markers:
row 1: k all sts
row 2: kfb, k to last st, kfb
continue until 14 sts are between markers. Next row, remove sts to waste yarn, CO 2 sts in gap (I use backward loop method), continue in pattern as set.

Thumb Gusset

After completing the cable pattern, work 2 rows in 2×2 rib. BO loosely in pattern

Thumb: place sts from waste yarn onto ndls. Starting in gap, pu 4 sts. Work remaining 14 sts in 1×1 rib. Continue working all sts in 1×1 rib for 6-8 rounds.

Right wristwarmer:

Work as for left hand with the following mods for gusset:
Row 1: Work first 24 stitches in cable pattern as set. PM, kfb twice, pm, continue in pattern.
Row 2: k all sts between markers.
Row 3: slm, kfb, k to last st, kfb, slm continue in pattern as set.
Repeat rows 2&3 until 14 sts between markers.

Note: To make longer wristwarmers, increase the number of rows of ribbing at the beginning or end.

Abbreviations:
CO – Cast On
C6F – slip 3 stitches to cable needle and hold in front. K3, then k3 from cable needle.
C6B – slip 3 stitches to cable needle and hold in back. K3, then k3 from cable needle.
pm – place marker
kfb – knit into front and back of stitch
slm – slip marker
